When remodeling your kitchen there are many things to think about. When we started thinking about remodeling our kitchen there were many things we discussed before beginning. We knew we were keeping the same layout and replacing everything but the appliances and flooring since they had been replaced a few years prior. We knew we would be doing all the work except the countertop installation and also knew what our budget was. It can be overwhelming to know where to begin so here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you start the process.
- What is your budget?
- Think about your overall budget and what percentage of that will be for cabinets, countertops, flooring, lighting, backsplash, hardware, labor and appliances. Generally people spend anywhere from $75 to $250 per square foot.
- Are you doing a full renovation or a partial remodel?
- Maybe your existing cabinets work for you but you want to replace the countertops and backsplash. Maybe you don’t need new appliances. Knowing if you are doing a full reno or partial will directly relate to your budget.

- Will you be doing all of the renovations, some of the renovations, or none of it yourself?
- Some people may be handy enough to do all of the work themselves. We were fortunate enough that my husband and father-in-law could do it all besides install the countertops. However, you may not be in the same situation. You may still feel confident enough to remove the old cabinets, countertops, and appliances. That would save you some money.
- Are you changing the layout of your kitchen?
- If you plan to keep the existing layout, it will save you money. You may want to change it though to a layout that works better for you and meets your needs better. If that is the case, get an edesign to help you envision the best layout for your space.
- What color scheme do you want?
- Thinking about the overall colors and aesthetics will help you narrow down your choices for cabinets, countertops, paint, and backsplash. If you have no ideas of where to begin, Pinterest is a great place to get ideas.

- What is your plan while your kitchen is under construction?
- Thinking and planning for washing dishes and preparing food will help the process be less stressful. Do you have a utility sink close by to wash dishes? Would paper plates and cups be useful? Foil pans for cooking? Having a Crock-pot, InstaPot, and electric frying pan will also be useful to have.
- Who do I know that can help with the project?
- Do you have friends that can recommend contractors? Do you need help from a design service to help you envision your remodel? Do I know of places to go to look at cabinets and countertops?
